Donald Driver Offered Restructured Contract

Donald Driver has been great to the Packers during his 13 seasons

Donald Driver has been a leader for the Packers for many years, a humble guy with no character concerns. Over the span of his 13 seasons as a Packer he has become the Packers leader in overall receptions and yards. Driver was drafted in the seventh round of the 1999 NFL Draft out of Acorn State. Since then he has had 735 receptions, 10,060 yards, and 59 receiving touch downs.

Donald has really lived out his NFL career, he made three Pro Bowls in 2002, 2006, and 2007, and was on the All Pro team during 2006, not to mention his win in Super Bowl XLV. Most recently Driver won Dancing With The Stars, a show in which dancers dance with celebrities and get voted to move on and keep competing. Although dancing Driver was not practicing with the team, everyone was thinking about him, him and the 2.6million dollars he will put on the Packers salary cap. That’s right, Donald Driver 37 year old receiver will cost 2.6million dollars this year, not to mention the 1.5million he is due at the start of training camp. Driver is a great person as mentioned above, but he is not productive enough to make this much money! Last year Driver had 37 receptions for 445 yards and 6 touchdowns, he also led the team with dropped passes, with 8 dropped balls! After looking at that, then looking at his contract your first thought might be cut him. However, Driver is more than just a player, he is a presence and a mentor for all players, just not receivers. Therefore, the Packers made the right decision and offered him a restructured contract. The new contract will probably get rid of the bonus due at camp, keep him for one more year, and dramatically decrease his effect on the salary cap.

Driver has been effective out of the slot, making crucial catches over the middle when the team needs a first down, and seeing him get the opportunity to retire as a Packer pleases me. And who knows if our defense is fixed, our passing game stays the same or improves from last year, and our running game becomes solid, we could send Driver off with two rings on his fingers.
